If you ever dreamed of being the first 9-year old to design
a robot, if you think programming a robot sounds like WAY more fun than playing
a video game, or even if you just want to be amazed and inspired by what kids
in our community can accomplish, here’s your opportunity to support a new
generation of kids pursuing those same dreams.
How?
This year, Claxton Elementary School is home to two FIRST Lego League® (FLL) teams.
The teams are learning to build and program robots to compete in a
theme-based robot game; this year the challenge is Nature's Fury.
Teams complete and present a research project to propose innovative
solutions to a current challenge related to their research. Through all of this, teams must embrace the core values of the
FIRST® program, including teamwork,
fun, community service, fun, Gracious Professionalism, fun, “coopertition”,
and… did we mention fun? Teams will
compete in a regional tournament to be held here in Asheville on November 3rd
(save that date!).
We’re looking for sponsors! Total cost to field an FLL team starts at around $1,000 give or take, including team registration, supplies, equipment, and
expenses associated with tournament competition. In addition, this year we're looking to upgrade to the new EV3 robots.
Need to know more about the specific benefits of this
program?
- FLL is a recognized STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education program aimed at 9 – 14 year olds. Our teams are made up of 4th and 5th grade students selected through an application process started last spring.
- The program supports North Carolina educational curriculum standards, Common Core Standards, and is recognized by NC STEM.
- FIRST® started in 1989, and the FLL program was started in 1998. For the 2010 -2011 season, more than 171,000 kids from more than 50 countries participated in FLL.
- Students participating in FIRST programs are significantly more likely to attend college,
pursue careers in science or engineering fields, pursue advanced degrees, and
volunteer in their communities.

Your sponsorship supports our teams and helps to ensure that this program will continue to be available to
students in future years. Claxton’s FLL
funds are managed by our school administrator, Debrah Stewart, and are tax deductible. Contributions should be addressed to Claxton Elementary, Re: FLL Teams, 241 Merrimon Avenue, Asheville, NC 28801.
This is a great way to support our kids and our school and
to show your commitment to education and our community. Please consider becoming a sponsor!
Thank you!
